This is my 104 word letter in response to the lovely picture of moths beneath a highly-edited sign at a McDonald’s in Somewhere, USA.

moths

Dearest Wilbur,
Your comments and suggestions should be directed to someone who cares.
F.Y.I, that is NOT me.
(Perhaps your new secretary will oblige)
I don’t care if you hate my green dress and despise the brown one.
(You seem to like your secretary in ~ or out of ~ blue)
I will not dye my hair blonde.
(Like your secretary’s)
Pleasing you is no longer my concern.
(Your secretary is doing a fine job)
From now on you can eat at McDonald’s, iron your own clothes, and dust your own dust.
I sincerely thank you for fifteen miserable years. Claudette
P.S. I sold your cat

  1. 15 years? That’s not a long time from what I know! Although it’s probably a lot for a moth because they don’t live that long. Good for you, Claudette!

Great job, Alicia. Adding the lines with the strike through type really added to the humor of this piece. I don’t know anyone would actually buy a cat. I’ve always had to beg, plead, and pay people to take them. 🙂

    • Thanks, Russell. One of my writer/editor/blogger buddies showed me the strike-through idea during one of our writing practices. This is the first time I’ve used it, so thanks a bunch for noticing. Alicia P.S. I’ve only purchased one cat ~ he came with fleas and ringworm at no extra cost and turned out to be one of the best little buddies we ever had. The rest of our cats seem to find us.

I like this storytelling format. It’s a kind of before and after, past and present presentation that makes a real clear case. Go, Claudette! Nice job, Alicia.

I have seen it being used but this is the best one I read ……. I mean the strike through.

  21. Alicia, you made me ROFLMAO and you don’t know what that means? But seriously, this is wickedly clever, and delivers such a punch. ‘Dust your own dust’ – I can feel a ROFLMAO coming 😀

  22. I was grinning the whole way through — brilliantly done, Alicia, but then, I ALWAYS like your take on these prompts! My favorite line is definitely this: “From now on you can eat at McDonald’s, iron your own clothes, and dust your own dust.”
