It’s Wednesday/Friday again! Today’s picture prompt, provided by our Fairy Blog Mother, Rochelle, was taken by Lucy Fridkin. Thanks to both of you.

The whump-whump of the tug’s motor was the only heartbeat Jason needed to hear.
He liked people alright;
even got married – once.
But he loved isolation best, so the knock on the wheelhouse, and whispered, “May I board?” surprised him.
So did the way his best friend, Alice, looked.
“Roger . . .” Her bruised eye said it all.
“I’ll take care of it.”
After drink took Roger into a deep sleep aboard My Mistress, Jason drained the fuel, hooked her up to his tug and headed north out of the harbor.
Ten days and much shouting later, Jason cut his payload adrift on the frigid Bering Sea.

  1. Dear Alicia,

I take it that Roger was aboard the other boat. He needs to sleep with the fishes. Good one.

    Shalom,

  4. I think there are friends you would do anything for… I would guess that nothing was ever found out about Roger.

    • I have at least two friends that I say, “I would walk through hot coals for him/her.” I’m glad I’ve never needed to meet that challenge, but I do believe I would. Roger who?

Neat story, but I really like your comment above ‘A little light-hearted this week!’
Yeah, a bit of wife-beating and murder in a 100-word story is just a chuckle!

    • You just made me spew coffee! I thought about that after I wrote it. I MEANT for this one to be all kinds of light-hearted when I started. A tug boat captain, happy with his little tug, warm inside the cabin … then, before I knew it, the story took an evil twist. Guess I hadn’t caught up yet!

Jerk deserves to be taught a lesson, but hopefully Jason isn’t setting himself up for a murder charge.. Still, I think they could use what Roger named his boat as a piece of evidence in the trial. 😉

Ha ha! I’m having fun reading the comments as much as the story….
Sorry Roger, you can’t beat up his best friend…

    Dear Alicia,

Gotta love a good friend with a handy tug. I enjoyed this tale for many reasons, not the least the way you said so much without words. And they lived happily ever after. Sweet, neat and cold.

    Yours,

    Doug

Wow! I’m guessing Roger has a track record of this behave to earm such a final punishment? Love your scene setting Alicia – an effective way to show us your man’s character

  11. Michael Wynn says:

Great take and I loved the way Jason dealt with the problem, cut it adrift where it can’t do any harm and you can’t hear the noise. Will Roger survive? There’s a chance. For a moment I thought Jason was going to sink the boat or set fire to it, which would have been very final and definitely attract a murder charge if found out.

10 – 4, Roger Wilcox, over and out of the picture. Jason didn’t do anything wrong, just gave a buddy a little tow. Now, Roger can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Bering Sea.

I was thinking of the radio, too. Otherwise: perfect murder. Maybe the battery ran empty, too, or whatever it is that fuels radios on boats… Harsh but efficient and seeing a Jerk punished is always so satisfying. Great writing.
