When we heard Yankees shootin pigs over to the Baggerly farm
us kids took to hollerin like the devil was at the back door.
Mama? She straightened her spine and instructed the boys to gather up Daddy’s oil cans.
Told us girls to tie sugar, salt, and flour in paraffin paper and cram the packets inside them cans.
Meanwhile, she poked chickens in flour sacks; hid em in the woods.
When the Yanks arrived, saw oil cans lined up in Mama’s kitchen
and pine pitch stuck in her honey-blonde hair, they declared her crazy and backed out the door.

I remember my Grandmother hiding her most valued possessions in the least likely of locations and objects. Oddly, I’ve found myself doing the same thing… there’s some intelligence in that, I think. Loved your story… reminds me of my Gr. Uncle Jesse and his wife Cora… During Sherman’s march through Ohio… Cora took the family milk cow into the forest and deep into the gorge to hide it and herself in a cave/crevice. After Sherman came through, Jesse went to find her and bring her and their prized cow home… their home was burned to the ground, crops burned, and the well destroyed.

Wow! Jelli. Thanks for sharing that story. I’m glad your grandmother had her wits about her, and at least they had the cow!!! Cheers and Happy Holidays.

Back in those times, a cow was not only a necessity, but you were rich if you had one. Happy Holidays to you as well. Gonna be a busy December that’s for sure.

People forget that defeat can mean devastation. Good thing she could think on her feet and escape the worst impulses of the victors.

Excellent tale of bushwhackers and foraging soldiers. I’ve read several true stories of events such as this here in the Ozarks during the war of northern aggression.
